S for Saker - Whistle blower

"What’s happening in Ukraine? Gorbachev had it right. We’re in a new Cold War with Russia. The epicenter of the new Cold War is not in Berlin, like the last one, but it’s right on Russia’s borders, so it’s much more dangerous," explains Stephen Cohen.

Watch: Democracy Now! talks to Stephen Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies and politics at NYU and Princeton University.

  • Jay Hodgson ive watched the matter progress and its kiev that is the agressor, look at the basics- civilians are being bombed by the ukrainian army, men and women have taken up arms to defend against the ukraine army but they are not advancing west, russia isnt even helping defend people which is actually worse than taking a stand.. This topic was presented with bias propoganda in the opening question..
  • Amon Saker Basically, what you have in Ukraine is a nation that genuinely wanted political reform, but their "spring" & democratic revolution got hijacked by a U.S. backed coup that continues to empower the oligarchs (one of whom, Ihor Kolomoysky, employs Joe Biden's son on the board of his gas company waiting to drill in the rebel held regions). This coup put in place a pro-EU regime of uber nationalists, fascists & neo-nazis, all hostile to the largely ethnic Russian / Russian speaking, working class south-eastern region (which is certainly more like Russia than EU, but Ukraine won't just let it go due to the gas & coal, but I digress).

After the failed drive for democratic reform with Maiden, Donbass & surrounding south eastern regions voted & declared their independence. They resorted to this measure for several reasons. First, there is Kiev's ongoing hostility toward the working class/ industrial south east & it's mixed population (largely ethnic Russian/Russian speaking). This hostility manifests in many ways, including extreme nationalist demands like language & cultural conformity and even calls for ethnic cleansing by the growing nationalist, neoNazi & Right Sector movement. There is also disenchantment in the south east with conditions under the oligarchs who pay little & charge much (a handful control the entire country) & the fact that EU membership will kill much of their economy, which is tied to Russia. Therefore, I think it is quite reasonable for Donbass & surrounding areas to vote & declare their independence. For this, however, they been labeled "terrorists" & characterized by Kiev/ NATO/ EU/ US of invading Ukraine (they are "terrorists" who invade their own homes? They see themselves as following in the tradition of the American Revolution. See notes in reply).

Yes, Russia is involved. But, the Russians fighting with the separatists are there voluntarily & join other sympathetic fighters from all over Europe & even Asia, reportedly. It is Russia, moreover, that is sending in food, medical supplies, medics, & accepting thousands of refugees & conscripted Kiev soldiers who do not want to fight their countrymen. Kiev, by contrast, is shelling civilians & attracting neoNazi "fighters" from throughout Europe. In fact, Kolomoysky is financing some 30 neoNazi battalions to cleanse Donbass of those holding up gas production, and these extreme Right Sector NeoNazis have been engaged in horrendous human rights abuses (update: there now seems to be a power struggle brewing between the neoNazi Right sector battalions & the Ukrainian / Kiev military. This is bound to get interesting!)

This is not simply a story about the US & Russia, but it is only fair to consider that the US traveled half way around the world to foment regime change & supply Kiev with billions of dollars, arms & "military advisors," & yet Russia, which shares a border, ethnicity, family ties & history, economy etc with the "rebel" regions under attack, is labeled the invader by the western press?

The treatment that the situation in Ukraine has been given by the mainstream western media is truly criminal, and anybody who is trying to tell the truth is facing ridicule, ostracism & alienation. Dr. Stephen Cohen, for example, has actually been called a Putin apologist for challenging the mainstream narratives. Cohen is a well respected Russian specialist at Princeton. His work shows that he is no fan of the Soviet Union nor a jingoist for Putin. However, for daring to buck the narrative of the political establishment & calling out the propaganda of the American press, he has been called an "apologist" & lost funding for research. It is like we are re-entering the irrational anxiety & suppression of the Cold War era all over again.

I will post some links & sources in a reply to myself, as to not take up so much room on the thread. Everybody needs to seriously consider & research this for themselves, & not just regurgitate the mainstream media nor let your assumptions about Russia & Putin get control of your reasoning abilities. There is too much at stake all around. If we go to war with Russia (for no good reason), think about all the countries who will join with Russia, & consider that this would not just be a war that kills a generation of American men & boys somewhere else. It would touch town in our own backyards, guaranteed.
